A Short Guide on San Francisco’s Property Taxes for Fiscal Year 2023/2024

The Property Tax Rate changes every year with adjustments to the City’s budgetary needs, voter-approved debt overrides, and other factors.

 

The City and County of San Francisco’s property tax rate for the fiscal year 2023-2024 is 1.17769382%

According to Proposition 13, the established countywide rate is 1 percent. Any rate exceeding this 1 percent consists of voter-approved debt overrides. To illustrate, during the fiscal year 2001-02, the portion of the 1.1240% rate related to voter-approved debt overrides for the General City Bond was 0.1240%. When are property tax statements sent to owners? When is it due?

Property tax statements are sent to owners of San Francisco properties in October. Taxes may be paid in full on the first installment or in two installments. Property tax is due December 10th for the first installment and April 10th for the second installment.

What happens when I am late on San Francisco Property Tax payments?

If payment of the first installment is paid or postmarked after December 10th, there is a 10% penalty

If payment of the second installment is paid or postmarked after April 10th, there is a 10% penalty plus $55 administrative fee

Properties become tax defaulted after June 10th, where late payments are penalized 1.5% every month that it continues to be delinquent.
